Assessments in the PYP
Assessment, Recording and Reporting (ARR): Throughout the year students will regularly engage in teacher assessment; some year groups will also undertake formal standardized assessment. The purpose of Assessment at RCHK, in line with the ESF Assessment policy, is “to support student learning and help teachers better understand the progress of their learners.”
We aim to help parents understand the progress their child is making through the various methods of reporting.

How are assessments set?
When an assessment is set in class, the teacher will share the task with their students along with the criteria that is being assessed. Supporting the published IB criteria are a series of descriptors which are specific to the task (called task specific clarifications or TSC). These are designed to help the students to understand what is required of them to achieve their best in each task. Work is marked and graded according to the assessment criteria levels, feedback is given from the teacher and students are then encouraged to reflect on their performance and how it can be improved in the future. These reflections can also be used to help students to set their personal goals.
Assessment relies on both knowledge and skills in all subjects of the MYP and students must be able to recall, investigate, apply, analyse, create, evaluate and communicate. There are a wide range of assessment styles which are both formative and summative. These can be individual or collaborative assessments and they are designed to meet the wide variety of learning styles of all students.
Assessing the Personal Project
Student success in the Personal Project is assessed through the Final Report. Students can access a detailed rubric explaining the various strands of the three assessment criteria. Their grade for the Personal Project is determined by their Supervisor and will count towards their final MYP grade.
Reporting on assessment
There are three formal reporting periods during the course of the year. End of semester reports provide overall achievement grades 1-7 for each subject as well as individual levels for each criteria graded 1-8. These marks reflect how students have performed in assessments during the semester.
Assessment in DP
IB Diploma Programme assessment procedures are designed to emphasise process rather than content and to achieve a balanced assessment of a candidate’s performance. Various assessment methods are used to take account of different learning styles and cultural experiences, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities. Conventional external examination techniques are complemented by internal assessment of coursework conducted by teachers.
Written Examinations |
These may include essays and short answer questions, document and data-based questions, multiple-choice tests, comprehension exercises, etc |
Oral Examinations |
These are conducted according to procedures established by the IB |
Internal Assessment |
According to the requirements of the subject, this may take the form of guided coursework, project work, fieldwork, practical and/or laboratory work. All Internal Assessments is subject to external moderation by the IB, which is rigorously conducted and reported upon. |
Extended Essay |
The Extended Essay must be based on one of the subjects of the IB Diploma curriculum under the supervision of a qualified teacher at the school The Extended Essay is externally assessed |
Theory of Knowledge |
ToK is based on a programme outline provided by the IB The course is designed and implemented by a team of ToK teachers |
Creativity, Activity and Service |
