What is good governance about?
Performance | Conformance |
how an organisation uses governance arrangements to contribute to its overall performance and the delivery of services and programmes | how an organisation uses governance arrangements to ensure it meets the requirements of the law, regulations, published standards and community expectations of probity, accountability and openness |
ESF also recognise the importance of sustainability, digital transformation, and diversity and inclusion as essential components of good governance.

The 2004 UK Independent Commission for Good Governance developed six principles of Good Governance:
- focusing on the organisation’s purpose and outcomes;
- performing effectively in clearly defined functions and roles;
- taking informed, transparent decisions and managing risk;
- promoting values for the whole organisation and demonstrating the values of good governance through behaviour;
- developing the capacity and capability of the governing body to be effective; and
- engaging stakeholders and making accountability real.
